Marmyadoise is a fascinating, if sometimes overlooked, sword in Arthurian legend. Its history often positions it as a weapon of immense power, even sometimes surpassing Excalibur in perceived strength. Marmyadoise is often said to be a sword of truly ancient and even divine origin. Some traditions trace its lineage back to the Greek hero Hercules. It's described as a weapon forged by the gods, perhaps even by the smith god Vulcan, and tempered by goddesses or fairies. This background imbues it with incredible magical properties and power. In the Arthurian narratives where it features most prominently, Marmyadoise is in the possession of King Rions, a powerful and often tyrannical enemy of King Arthur. Rions is notorious for demanding the beards of conquered kings to adorn his cloak, a testament to his ruthlessness and power. He is depicted as a giant or a very formidable warrior, and Marmyadoise is his signature weapon. Arthur eventually comes into conflict with King Rions. Accounts vary, but in some versions, Arthur battles Rions, defeats him, and captures Marmyadoise. The sword is often described as being so magnificent and powerful that Arthur desires it "more than any city."
Superior to Excalibur? This is where Marmyadoise becomes truly notable. In some retellings, particularly within the Vulgate Cycle of Arthurian romances, Arthur finds Marmyadoise to be superior to Excalibur. Its powers are sometimes described as causing wounds that would never heal, or being so bright it could illuminate the countryside. Because of its perceived superiority, Arthur is said to have given Excalibur to Sir Gawain after acquiring Marmyadoise. In essence, Marmyadoise serves as a potent reminder that the Arthurian legends are a tapestry woven from various sources and traditions. While Excalibur remains the most famous, other weapons like Marmyadoise offer glimpses into alternate or earlier versions of the myth, highlighting the immense power and magic that permeated these legendary tales.
